Traffic Aggregation

Traffic Aggregation section allows you to summarize inbound and outbound traffic for several ports simultaneously. The traffic is calculated on the basis of data collected with an SNMP protocol. These data are being saved during the polling process to RRD files with an RRD tool.

RRDtool is a graphing utility made by Tobi Oetiker and released under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). It is simply a program that takes data sets you collect and graphs them. RRDtool (acronym for round-robin database tool) correlates time-series data like network bandwidth, temperatures, CPU load or any other data type. Data is stored in a round-robin database (circular buffer) which allows the system storage footprint to remain constant over time. The database will always have the same amount of data points throughout its lifetime. When new data comes in, the oldest data set is removed (FIFO).

Important Cases

1. Why data in monthly summary differ from data on the graph?
This change is due to the fact that rrdtool is consolidating data, adapting it to the resolution of the chart you are drawing. Your initial chart shows high resolution data while the second chart covers a wider time range and thus shows several data points wrapped into one.
Consider the following: original: 10,10,10,0,10,10 - consolidated 2 to 1: 10,5,10.

2. Port must be connected to a switch port in the system.
Only then traffic for the specific port is properly collected, take a look at the example:

3. The traffic of specific server’s port is the traffic of connected switch port to server’s port.
In other words, traffic is downloaded from the switch, not from the server. This form of traffic calculation allows you to freely mamange the servers in EasyDCIM system. Thanks to this you just need to add a switch to EasyDCIM, which has proper SNMP protocol configuration, and data about the traffic will be properly collected from that switch.
We don’t need to configure SNMP protocol settings for each server, it’s enough to just configure several switches which respond to incoming and outgoing traffic in our company.

4. Why don’t I see graphs and the traffic summary?
There are few causes:
* Make sure graphs are drawn correctly for specific ports. Move to a switch connected to one of our server ports to check it.
* Make sure that port or ports of the server which you have chosen in Traffic Aggregation sections are connected to switch port. Ports disconnected from the server on switch are not taken into account when counting traffic.

To configure the ports that you want to use in the process of counting Traffic press Configure button located on the left side in Traffic Aggregation section.

The form that is displayed is very simple, it contains a list of all server ports, from the list choose specific ports and confirm action by clicking on Save Changes button.

Basic view of Traffic Aggregation section presents as follows:

In the upper part we can see former views with traffic graphs for a given period of time. These are respectively: Last 6 Hours, Last 24 Hours, Last 48 Hours, Last Week, Last Month, Last Six Months or Last Year. To load data from a specific period, just click on the thumbnail of a given graph.

Then you will see a table with data with traffic for our previously chosen period. Columns define the sequence interval, incoming traffic, outgoing traffic, and summary of incoming and outgoing traffic.

Below, you will see Aggregate Traffic graph for our chosen server ports. The interval is determined on the basis of our earlier choice. Data can be filtered easily by selecting starting and ending dates. Then click Filter Graphs button. Below the graph, you will find Total In and Total Out values. In some cases they may differ from the values in the table above, this is due to the fact described in step 1 in Important Cases section. Next, you will see the list of ports on the basis of which the summary traffic and the current, average, maximal traffic is counted per specific port.

Monthly Traffic History

In the same section, you will also find a table with Traffic History for specific months. There are values for the last 12 months plus the current month. When you click on graph in the Graph column, you will be redirected to the current page with appropriate filtering dates. Please note that our system has to work continuously throughout the whole month to ensure the results are credible. In case of problems with the system operation, the data that could not be gathered, will calculated on the basis of an average sample from a given period of time.
